Giddy Sprite’s most Northerly stockist is Starfish Studio on the East coast of Scotland, just below Aberdeen.  The small coastal village of Johnshaven is home to the nationally acclaimed fish festival,  and attracts visitors all year round.

In this pretty village is Starfish Studio, begun by Kate MacKenzie 6 years ago.  Kate says, ‘I had wanted to open a shop to showcase the best of affordable British art and design for a very long time, so when an opportunity presented itself, I jumped at the chance!’

Kate is a wonderful artist herself, producing vibrant paintings of Scottish scenes, and creating work using textiles and beads.  We are particularly taken with this stunning painting of the village of Johnshaven which Kate created, as it has a simplicity and boldness which we celebrate in our own designs at Giddy Sprite:

So what else happens at Starfish Studio.  Well, not only is it a gallery and shop, it also runs workshops from October to June, and offers courses in beading, textiles, crochet, jewellery-making and felting.  We couldn’t resist including an image of this gorgeous and hilarious brooch, which can be made at one these workshops:

Hielan' Coo Brooch

Such fun!  It’s a Heilan’ Coo.  And so perfectly captures that quintessentially Scottish cow.

One of the things that Kate loves about her business is that she offers the opportunity to individuals and small businesses to display and sell their art and design to the public.  We’re delighted that Giddy Sprite products are on offer in this extraordinary hub of artistic creation and community crafting – it’s the simplicity of the illustrations and the quality of the products which is so attractive to Kate.  And her customers are particularly taken with the humour of our Pusskin cat clocks.  There is obviously an affinity between these two businesses – one so far up North, and one so far down South….simplicity of design, and humour.
